NEVER before has there been such a raging passion around sports. Big screens, live telecasts, beer, cocktails, euphoric cheering, it’s all happening.
And while the sports scene continues to steadily pick up, the craze might just skyrocket to dizzying proportions during the upcoming Indo-Pakistan matches, starting from March 13. Need we add that the buzz has already begun and restaurants and clubs across the city are gearing up for the thunderous response.

Says Tehseen Poonawala, whose sports bar at the Sagar Plaza was a pioneer of sorts, “Ours is the first Formula One bar in the country and has always attracted race fans in the city. Over the last two years though, all sports, including hockey and tennis have drawn quite a crowd. Of course, when it comes to cricket it’s always a full house.� For the India-Pak matches they will be a cover charge and unlimited beer and snacks. A crowd of at least 150 people is expected.
Ten Downing Street has hosted sporting events for the last seven years. Whether it’s cricket, football or F1, it has always been a full house. Manager Surender Vanam tells us that the market for sporting events is only growing. Since it’s summer time, beer will be the hot favourite. At least 300 people are expected to pour in.
Corinthian is another place that takes sporting events very seriously. Says Kevin Cunnigham, food and beverage manager, “With people becoming more and more health conscious, sporting events are simultaneously picking up. We regularly host such events. Cricket and football are the most popular.�
Raceday, a dedicated sports bar that opened last week, also has some plans up their sleeve for the Indo-Pakistan matches.
The newly-opened multi-cuisine restaurant, Flags, will be regularly hosting big screen telecasts of sporting events. Says owner Vriksh Kapri, “Food and cricket will be the theme for the five one dayers during the Indo-Pak series that we are screening.� An added attraction will come in the form of the Pakistani food that will be served here.
